Mary floated gracefully out of the mid-morning fog into the twinkling light of the frosted fallen leaves of the churchyard, the most beautiful bride ever to grace the steps of the Church of St Michael the Archangel.

Her eyes sparkled as bright as her gown, her smile as wide as the day we first met. She wore a modest dress, like herself, which flowed to the ground, bearing nothing but a perfect plunging neckline. How I wished to be those satin silk ruffs resting upon my beloved’s flesh, caressing her soft skin through all the cast shadows of the sundial; but the crowds gathered quickly outside, their cheers forcing me out of my fantasy to find my fingers gripped ever so tight.

My gaze dropped from her smile to her hand, his fingers clasped where mine should rest. His and Hers wedding bands glistened; silver to a magpie, pigeon to pistol.

A shot rang out, piercing the dank Dartmoor air; a spot of red seeped through silk like a wilted petal from a rose.

My matron yet a maid, laid out white as her dress. A true sleeping beauty who shall never rest.
