by John Grey
Man hawking rose-quartz obelisks.
Woman behind a table laden with crystal balls.
Out in a desert of lofty sun and cranked-up winds,
some old geyser works the emery wheel,
polishes stone after stone.
If not in need of a rock for the mantel,
there’s always a bolo tie to flatter the neck
or a fancy belt buckle embedded with jewels.
But it’s the giant amethyst-lined geode that draws the biggest crowd.
All the way from Brazil, brags the seller.
“At ten thousand bucks, it’s a steal.”
But most collect gems and minerals in more friendly sizes.
They don’t want to bother their wallets that much.
Maybe even synthetics, with colors so varied and bright,
the earth has some catching up to do.
So many stones that you can’t eat or read on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
So many stones that won’t fuel your engines, heal your wounds,
save your marriage or slow your aging.
Yet I’m taken by the oddly-named thunder egg.
Its outside is ordinary like most of the people here.
But, bust it open, and the gleam within matches the eye.
